Why You Need to Purchase a Water Filter

As people become more health conscious, they make the active decision to improve aspects of their lives which simply may not have occurred to them in the past. One of these decisions is to start hydrating more often. However, drinking water straight out the tap – or from an aquifer of some kinds can come with some inherent risks. This is why water filters are becoming increasingly popular. Water from a variety of sources, especially where plumbing systems are beginning to age can contain bacteria and other microorganisms that can be dangerous to health. From municipal systems are especially prone to containing contaminants due to inadequate maintenance.

In addition, water taken from these systems also contains dirt and chemicals which may cause long term health issues. Using a water filter not only removes these contaminants – but can also make the water taste better and fresher.

There are a variety of ways that water filters can make water more healthy to drink. when it comes to suspended particles, many water filters use a mechanical method to remove those particles. These mechanical filters range from metal mesh to fabric and paper filters. The most popular of these is the paper filter which can simply be replaced on regular intervals. However, by and large, the sediment will not be harmful to health.

However, other contaminants can undoubtedly be harmful – and many of the more advanced filtration systems can remove these dangerous pathogens. A good example is the removal of bacteria and parasites – including those that cause Giardiasis. This illness can result in diarrhea that may last over a month. The parasite that causes this illness is Giardia intenstinalis – and it thrives in water that has become contaminated by human feces or animal waste. Another parasite is Cryptosporidium – which is chlorine resistant – and that can spell trouble as many older municipal systems use chlorine to make drinking water safe for human consumption. Water filtration systems of varying fineness (classified as micro, ultra and nano) make water safe from these parasites, especially when they offer filtration in the nano range.

Lead can also cause problems. It is usually present in older piping where it was used for the pipes themselves or as a soldering product to seal the joints of pipes. If you have concerns about the lead content in your drinking water, then it is highly recommended that you invest in a water filter that uses reverse osmosis, distillation or a carbon filter to remove the metal. Heavy metals can also be a problem as these were used in pesticides in the 1940s and have found their way into groundwater in many areas. Carbon filters are most useful in removing heavy metals.

In short – an investment in a water filter pays long term dividends as far as health is concerned. As an added benefit they also make water taste better. It’s an investment that simply makes sense from any perspective when it comes to quality of life.
